A doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, West Bengal, was allegedly raped and murdered. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has now stated that she is open to a CBI investigation into the cases
RG Kar Doctor Murder: Amid increasing pressure on the Bengal government over the alleged rape and murder of a female doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, CM Mamata Banerjee said on Saturday that she has no objection to an investigation by a central agency. She also called for the case to be fast-tracked in court, with the perpetrators receiving the death penalty.
In an exclusive interview with ABP Ananda, Mamata Banerjee said, “This was an inhuman and heinous crime. I feel like I’ve lost a member of my own family. We can never defend such a crime. There can be no leniency for such an act.”
The junior doctor’s body was found in a seminar hall on Friday morning, with injuries on her body and blood coming from her eyes and mouth. Initial post-mortem results indicate that she was sexually assaulted.
Following the murder, doctors at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital staged large-scale protests and called for a “work stoppage,” demanding better security for medical staff and strict action against the trainee doctor’s killer. Responding to this, Mamata Banerjee said, “I stand with the doctors. Their demands are entirely justified… The role of hospital officials will also be investigated, and if negligence is found, action will be taken.”
She mentioned that she had spoken to the victim’s parents and added, “The police have made progress in the canse and have arrested a suspect. The criminal will not be spared.”
The incident has been widely condemned by the opposition in Bengal. The BJP has accused the TMC government of trying to shield the culprits. Leader of the Opposition in Bengal, Suvendu Adhikari, said, “The state government has formed an 11-member investigation committee, some of whom are interns. In my opinion, the state government is either trying to cover up the case to hide their negligence or they are not serious about it at all.”
Calling for an investigation by a central agency, Suvendu Adhikari stated, “This is clearly a case of murder [with a possibility of rape]. The case should be handed over to the CBI immediately.” Speaking to ABP Ananda on Saturday, Mamata Banerjee said she had no objection to a CBI investigation. She added, “If the students [protesting trainee doctors] don’t trust the Bengal government, they can request an investigation by any agency of their choice… This case should be dealt with by a fast-track court, and justice should be delivered within three to four days.”
When asked if her government would accept a CBI investigation, CM Mamata said, “Our government has nothing to hide. Therefore, we have no objection to such demands. We want this resolved as quickly as possible. The Police Commissioner was at the hospital all night. He was in touch with me until 2 AM and updated me in the morning.
